Mindful Living: The Real Practice of Self-Care
Self-care is essential for anyone looking to improve their overall well-being. It can be difficult to know where to start, especially if you’re not sure what you need. This breakdown will discuss the different aspects of self-care and how you can implement them into your everyday life and truly step into mindful living. We’ll cover topics such as brain care, body care, and soul care, and provide tips on how you can make self-care a habit!
Before we dive into our areas of focus it’s important for you to see yourself as a whole human. There are multiple aspects of your existence that you have to embrace so that you can finally understand and implement self-care into every part of your life. Self-care is so much more than spa days and yoga retreats (but, those are welcome inclusions…don’t write them off). When you look at yourself as a whole human you welcome the notion that everything we do to care for ourselves includes brain care and body care, but also being and soul care. Today we are going to look at the importance of self-care which includes nurturing the brain, the body, and the soul (or whole being).
First, what is Mindful Living?
Living mindfully, is recognizing that we have to be intentional with our whole being. In our culture, we tend to be so focused on what we HAVE and what we DO, but Whole Humaning also includes who we BE. Being mindful is being aware of who you are, how you function, and how to intentionally care for your whole self.
Now, let’s get to the good stuff. Mindful Living: The Real Practice of Self-Care
A mindful focus on Brain Self-Care:
There are so many reasons to talk about brain self-care. This aspect of self-care allows us to reinforce our minds so we can optimize our everyday performance and ward off disease and decline in the future. Beyond that, how we care for our brain will determine how well we are able to function in the world around us – relationally, professionally, and even with pleasure. When our minds are cared for they can better engage with the life that is so important to us.
From daily actions to nutrition that is specifically beneficial for brain self-care, being mindful of how you use, feed, and work your brain is the key to mindfully developing a care regimen that improves your quality of life.
A mindful focus on Body Self-Care:
When most people think of self-care this is often the area that gets the most attention. We think of spa trips, yoga retreats, facials, massages… you get the picture. And I’m a BIG fan of all of those things (seriously, if it’s luxurious and makes me feel like I’m treating myself…I’m doing it!). So, I don’t want to downplay the usefulness of these exercises as body self-care, but I do want to expand your knowledge so that you can more mindfully care for your body in a way that truly changes your life. Ultimately, our goal is to age with strength and grace. Exercise is essential just like nutrition but there are elements that impact our daily life that need to be looked at through a deeper lens.
Creating meaningful actions and rituals that engage and impact your body positively throughout the day is the key to mindful body self-care.
A mindful focus on Being Self-Care:
If you work with me through my comprehensive self-care course you know that the focus of how we BE is woven into every aspect of our self-care journey and our overall approach to life. Our being, our soul, and how we show up in the world, need to be nurtured and cared for as much (if not more) than any other part of our life. This is the focus that is so easily overlooked in the self-care world.
Our state of being affects how we interact with the world. When we aren’t cultivating gratitude, appreciating where we’ve been AND where we’re going, and consciously seeking joy – we aren’t truly caring for ourselves.
Mindful Being self-care changes everything. It changes us, and our world, from the inside out.
You see, mindful living and the real practice of self-care is so much more than a simple checklist. It’s a deep dive into the why, how, and when to best care for the many parts of ourselves. More and more we are learning that TRUE self-care can be a catalyst for change in our lives. It can take us from a life of dreaming to a life of creating.
